Honoring Those Who Led Me Here: A Tribute to My Family

You know, nothing prepares you for the twists and turns life throws your way. For me, it all started with my Poppop. William Joseph McGowan Sr. was more than just a grandfather — he was my go-to guy for wisdom, a champion of the ordinary turning into extraordinary moments. Watching him navigate the challenges of Dementia was both heartbreaking and inspiring. He taught me that love isn't always about the grand gestures. Sometimes, it's the small things, like holding a hand or sharing a quiet moment, that make all the difference. Then there's my Mommom, Agnes M. McGowan. A fierce warrior in her own right, she was the strength behind the laughter in our family. I spent countless afternoons by her side, providing comfort as she faced her own twists of fate. Her spirit reminds me to find joy amidst grief — a lesson that ignited my desire to be there for others in their moments of transition. And then there is my dad, William Joseph McGowan Jr. He was my heart, cut short far too soon by Melanoma. Losing him was like losing my anchor, but through this journey of grief, I've learned that love transcends even the final goodbyes. His spirit serves as my guiding light, motivating me to spread kindness and warmth exactly when it's needed most.
These three incredible souls didn’t just lead me to this path—they pushed me, nudged me, and whispered into my heart to embrace this role as a death doula. They showed me that every end is really a new beginning. With each guiding moment they shared, I felt a calling: to stand by those who are walking their own paths of grief and transition. Let’s be honest—death isn’t just a medical event; it’s a human experience, one filled with memories, stories, and love. Through my experiences with them, I discovered that we don’t just need to confront the inevitabilities of life; we need to celebrate the lives that came before us. That's why I'm here—to help others navigate not only the weight of grief but also the beauty of legacy. It’s a journey of understanding that death doesn’t take our loved ones away; it simply transforms our relationships in the most significant of ways. So here I am, armed with the lessons from my family, ready to walk alongside you as you embark on your own journey. Together, let’s explore what it means to honor the ones who led us here and weave their memories into a legacy that shines bright in the hearts of those who follow.
